So is the fire equipment you carry on board. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Having the right type of equipment impacts your readiness to respond to emergencies. The <a href=\"https:\/\/firechief.iso.com\/FCWWeb\/mitigation\/ppc\/3000\/ppc3003.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">Insurance Service Office<\/span><\/a> considers fire apparatus equipment when assessing the fire safety risk level of your community, which may affect local insurance premiums. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your fire equipment requirements may vary depending on the needs of your department and the apparatus in your fleet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve compiled a summary of some of the key equipment you\u2019ll want to keep in mind when outfitting your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jonsmidamerica.com\/new-fire-trucks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jonsmidamerica.com\/preowned-inventory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used fire apparatus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire Hoses, Foam and Nozzles<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">While it seems like such a simple tool, the fire hose has a big job. All of your hoses must meet stringent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firerescue1.com\/fire-products\/apparel\/fire-jackets-and-coats\/articles\/1206310-Fire-truck-equipment-What-you-should-own\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">requirements<\/span><\/a> in order to meet the demands of your department and community. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must be able to connect to a fire hydrant or plumbing system. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must carry water and\/or fire retardant chemicals to the fire.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must be proper length and diameter to carry the proper amount of water or chemicals the required distance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the ISO, the required hose length and diameter depend upon the amount of water you need to flow and how far the water must travel from the source to the fire. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">You need both firefighting hoses and supply hoses on board.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Supply hose.<\/b> A single engine company should carry at least 1200\u2019 of supply hose with a diameter of 2 \u00bd\u201d or larger. Supply hoses may come in a combination of diameters depending on flow requirements &#8212; such as 2\u201d, 2 \u00bd\u201d or 3\u201d. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Booster hose.<\/b> At least 200\u2019 required. An extra pre-connected 1 \u00bd\u2019 hose may substitute. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Carried hose.<\/b> One 400\u2019 required with 1 \u00bd\u201d diameter. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Spare hoses.<\/b> Need one 1 \u00bd\u201d diameter spare 200\u2019 in length and one 2 \u00bd\u201d diameter 400\u2019 in length. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Heavy stream appliance.<\/b> Flow capacity of 1,000 gpm. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ISO has also published standards pertaining to <a href=\"https:\/\/jonsmidamerica.com\/tips-for-evaluating-fire-fighting-foam-systems\/\">fire fighting foam<\/a> and nozzle requirements. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">At least 10 gallons of carried foam and 15 gallons of spare. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">One distributing nozzle<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">One foam nozzle of 1 \u00bd\u201d minimum<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two 2 \u00bd\u201d straight stream nozzles with shut-off<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two 2 \u00bd\u201d combination nozzles with shut-off<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two 1 \u00bd\u201d combination nozzles with shut-off<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">You also need one hose clamp, one hydrant gate of 2 \u00bd\u201d, one burst hose jacket of 2 \u00bd\u201d and one gated wye of 2 \u00bd\u201d x 1 \u00bd\u201d x 1 \u00bd\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fire Ladders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ladders will vary depending on the type of apparatus you\u2019re driving. Some ladders are mounted on the fire truck &#8212; including turntable, tower and tiller ladders. The apparatus may also hold smaller ladders for carrying. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The ISO looks for two basic types of fire ladders at a minimum: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">At least one 12\u2019 or 14\u2019 roof ladder<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">At least one 24\u2019 extension ladder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SCBA Equipment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment provides a steady supply of oxygen and is essential for protecting firefighters from lung damage caused by smoke inhalation. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">SCBA gear has three basic parts: a face mask, pressure regulator and high pressure tank of 2200 to 4500 pounds per inch (psi). <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">It is mounted on a frame to allow maximum firefighter mobility. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">The ISO requires at least four units with a minimum 30-minute supply of oxygen per unit. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firefighter Turnout Gear and Other Firefighter Gear<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Turnout gear is the protective clothing firefighters wear while battling fires, and it covers the following items: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Coats<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pants<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Boots<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Gloves<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Masks<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Helmets<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firefighter protective clothing includes 3 layers: <\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Outer shell &#8211; flame resistant, tear and puncture resistant<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Thermal liner &#8211; insulated from heat<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Moisture barrier &#8211; protects against water, fire retardant fluids and chemicals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to turnout gear, your apparatus must have other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firerescuemagazine.com\/articles\/print\/volume-6\/issue-3\/firefighting-operations\/a-guide-to-the-daily-equipment-check.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s2\">firefighter gear<\/span><\/a> onboard: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Radio and radio strap<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Flashlight<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Survival gear<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Spare gear bag<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Halligan<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Roof hook<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Fire Apparatus Equipment Needs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Your apparatus should also include a number of items that are securely mounted inside or on the vehicle, and not loose where they could shift during transit. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Radios &#8211; at least one mounted and one portable. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Handlight &#8211; need at least two. Must be 4 volts wet or 6 volts dry. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Box lights and portable light generators. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hand tools and power tools. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Positive pressure fans. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ropes and cords. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Water supply. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Water extinguisher. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fireapparatusmagazine.com\/articles\/print\/volume-15\/issue-3\/departments\/apparatusideas\/nfpa-1901-says-you.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s4\">Dry chemical<\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> fire suppression. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Axes and pike poles. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Traffic vests, cones and tarps. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do you have questions about choosing the right equipment for your next fire apparatus?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jonsmidamerica.com\/contact\/\">Talk to<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Jon\u2019s Mid America.
